Four hundred thousand grocery orders a day. Within months of launching beta operations in 200 cities, Reliance JioMart announced that mind-boggling number. Market leader Bigbasket hasn’t clocked that in its nine years of existence, leave alone three-year-old Amazon Prime Now, Grofers, and Flipkart Supermart.

While JioMart will take Flipkart and Amazon head-on in horizontal e-commerce, its immediate target is the grocery category. At the Reliance Industries AGM in July, chairman Mukesh Ambani, while updating shareholders about the progress of JioMart, spoke almost entirely about the strides the firm had made in the grocery category.
