The union budget 2020-21 has outlined multi-pronged budgetary measures for the power sector in line with the Prime Minister’s ambitious energy transition initiatives. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced many forward-looking plans in the budget for the power sector.

Energy & Utilities: Clear focus on developing the sector

The budget has clearly outlined a key push toward bringing significant reforms in the power distribution segment, given the viability concerns of distribution utilities across India. The recognition of DISCOM viability as a critical agenda in the sector itself is a positive step in this direction. The announcement of INR 3.05 trillion package for the ailing power distribution sector is encouraging.
